Yoni Steaming

Yoni steaming is an ancient ritual practice that is quickly being rediscovered in the Western world. Nothing new, but definitely a new mainstream craze that needs to be clearly understood. Yoni means sacred space, and represents your vagina and womb. The yoni is also located in the root chakra. The root chakra is the first chakra. Its energy is based on the earth element. It’s associated with the feeling of safety and grounding at the base of the chakra system and lays the foundation for expansion in your life. Yoni steaming is about more than uterine health, and it is absolutely more than a beauty treatment. The practice brings a reconnection to the female body and to the immense wisdom of plant medicine. It is an opportunity for women to celebrate and cherish their bodies, and learn to enjoy their wombs as the beautiful, sacred center from which we radiate our capacity to change the WORLD. Yoni steaming is also about women taking back ownership of our personal health, and utilizing our intuition, as well as gifts from the Earth, to support and nourish our well-being. This is also about trusting the wisdom of generations of women, elevating their perspectives as not only valid, but necessary to our health.

This women’s treatment gently and effectively cleanses, tones and revitalizes a woman’s center, providing a benefits from reduced menstrual cramps to increased fertility. Yoni steaming is said to support one’s natural feminine cycle (supporting releasing of dark blood at the beginning or end of menstrual cycle), and help you to heal endometriosis, pelvic pain, uterine prolapse, constipation and PCOS, relax, and detoxify both physically and emotionally. Yoni steaming can be done the week after your menstrual cycle and the week before. And once every 2 weeks if treating fibroids or irregularity. There are numerous herbs that can be used in a yoni steam, and it is always advisable to contact a Natural Health and Wellness Consultant, Naturopath or Holistic Health Consultant to ensure that your blend is personally tailored for you and your concerns. The most common and effective herbs that I am aware of are Red Clover, Nettle, Rosemary, Cannabis, Mugwort, Basil, Motherwort, Calendula, Lavender, Red Raspberry Leaf, Damiana, Plantain, Juniper, Peony, Witch Hazel, Yarrow, Cedar Berries, Rose and Dong Quai. Organic, organic, organic... is the requirement for the herbal blend you decide to use. You do not want to get pesticides and other harmful chemicals in such a delicate space. I would highly recommend you researching as much as you can on your own.

Anytime we give ourselves and our precious bodies a treatment at home, we should be sure to do our research and listen to our intuition. As you consider trying a yoni steam at home, be aware that a yoni steam should not be done under certain circumstances, including: in the case of pregnancy, during menstruation, or with any kind of intrauterine device (IUD). It is also wise to avoid yoni steaming in the case of an acute infection, illness or fever, or in the case of open wounds or inflammation. Finally, exercising simple caution during yoni steaming will help you to avoid burns. Never yoni steam with a continuous heat source, and test the temperature of the steam with the back of your hand before exposing your sensitive vaginal tissue. The steam should feel pleasantly warm, and you should immediately move away from the steam if it feels too hot. I have personally burned my inner thighs, by wanting the water to be really warm, but too intense for such sensitive areas. Although I have a high heat tolerance, THAT effect is quite different. Be very mindful of the water quality, and the element that you are boiling the water in as well. All aspect of the process matters. Take special care in this sacred ritual, as there is no more sacred space than your yoni.

How to Yoni Steam

  • Simmer 2 liters of water with 1/2 -1 cup of herbs on the stove for 10 minutes (bring to boil and then reduce)

  • Turn off the heat and let sit for 5 minutes to slightly cool with lid on. Place the pot into your steam stool/box, chair or into the toilet bowl

  • Disrobe from the waist down, and bring a blanket. Although, I like to get completely naked. Sit down and wrap the blanket around you for warmth and to help keep the steam inside.

  • Allow the steam to permeate for 20 – 40 minutes and remove the herbs (you should not reuse them) release them back to earth or dispose of them in your toilet without clogging your drain.

Top 7 Reasons You Should Steam Your YONI

Here are just a few of the reasons why you should try yoni steaming.

1.Yoni steaming feels GREAT!

If for no other reason, you should steam your vagina because it feels great. Extremely great! The gentle warmth and moisture of a yoni steam increase circulation to the exterior of your vagina. This is the same thing that happens when you are aroused. Steaming your vagina feels delightful. I invite you to step into and embrace your sensuality, pleasure and enjoyment of your body

2.Yoni steaming has been known to reduce or eliminate menstrual cramps.

Many women today confirm what has been known for centuries. Regular yoni steaming can reduce, if not eliminate, menstrual cramps, and everything that comes along with them such as bloating and fatigue. The herbal medicine helps to clear the congestion and build-up in your uterus that cause these normal, and very unnecessary, side effects of menstruation... making your monthly cycle more pleasant than ever.

3.Yoni steaming is a chance to reconnect with your magical Goddess self.

As a woman, your creative center is in your yoni, your vagina and womb and it is a powerful force in the world. A symbol of the Hindu Divine Mother, the yoni is revered in ancient Indian cultures as undeniably sacred. Yet most of us are disconnected with this powerful place in our bodies. Yoni steaming reconnects you with the goddess within you. It enlivens your wellness, inspires your purpose and cultivates your capacity for success. It is the origin of life, the place from which we birth not only babies, but ideas, visions and businesses. Your yoni is central to your energetic, emotional, sexual and intellectual wellbeing, and yoni steaming is a beautiful way to honor and celebrate this sacred part of your body.

4.Yoni steaming can detoxify your body.

It’s a well-known fact that steam can help draw toxins and impurities out of your skin via your sweat. Yoni steams utilize hydration and healing botanicals to increase circulation, open pores, thin mucus, dislodge stuck tissues, and release of toxins in all their forms. The gentle heat of the steam causes physical toxins to be released from cells into the lymphatic fluid, which is expelled from the body as sweat. When you expose your lady parts to gentle steam, you’re actually able to purge toxins out of your vagina, uterus and ovaries via the increased blood flow and opening of pores.

5.Yoni steaming is a great way to relax and unwind.

Not only does yoni steaming invite your body to release physical toxins, it encourages your mind and body to release emotional toxins too. Yoni steaming is super relaxing! And as a woman, you store emotional toxins – like stress, sadness and trauma – in your womb. Painful memories, emotional scars and self-doubts persist in our bodies as emotional toxins. Being the miraculous vehicle for life that it is, the human body stores these emotional toxins in energetic centers that can be found within your physical body. There, they create blockages that stifle success, hinder our creativity, drive and intuition, and even contribute to disease. Yoni steaming comforts and relaxes the mind and body, reducing anxiety and inviting in an enhanced sense of wellbeing. It also releases any stored emotions and soothes your nervous system… leaving you relaxed, de-stressed and generally happier.

6.Yoni steaming can help regulate an irregular cycle.

Many women experience an erratic cycle and an unpredictable flow, making their monthly moon time less than enjoyable. Fortunately, yoni steaming is a simple home treatment that is known to help reduce pain, bloating and exhaustion associated with menstruation, regulate irregular or absent cycles, increase fertility and speed healing in the postpartum period. It is also known to treat aspects of abnormal uterine pathology such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, uterine weakness, uterine prolapse and endometriosis. Women who practice yoni steaming find that the practice can help get their cycles are back on track within a couple of months. Regulated periods are often shorter, and lighter. Thank your yoni!

7. Because centuries of women’s wisdom isn’t wrong.

Yoni steaming is a proven remedy that has been passed down for generations among women. Women’s lived wisdom is as legitimate as any scientific study will ever be. Yoni steams have been used throughout history to support women’s reproductive health, and are still commonly used by women in Bhutanese, Indonesian, Indian and Mayan cultures, among others. Particularly in Mayan and Korean culture, the practice is still revered as an integral part of women’s health today. Dr. Rosita Arvigo, ND is a Naprapathic doctor and teacher of Maya medicine who lived and studied with Mayan healers in Belize for nearly 30 years. During her time working with local healers, she gained an intimate understanding of the long history and amazing benefits of vaginal steaming, locally referred to as a “bajo.” She later incorporated vaginal steaming into her Arvigo Techniques of Mayan Abdominal Therapy philosophy, and many credit Dr. Arvigo for bringing this ancient women’s health practice to the United States.
