Yoni Steaming

Yoni steaming is an ancient ritual practice that is quickly being rediscovered in the Western world. Nothing new, but definitely a new mainstream craze that needs to be clearly understood. Yoni means sacred space, and represents your vagina and womb. The yoni is also located in the root chakra. The root chakra is the first chakra. Its energy is based on the earth element. It’s associated with the feeling of safety and grounding at the base of the chakra system and lays the foundation for expansion in your life. Yoni steaming is about more than uterine health, and it is absolutely more than a beauty treatment. The practice brings a reconnection to the female body and to the immense wisdom of plant medicine. It is an opportunity for women to celebrate and cherish their bodies, and learn to enjoy their wombs as the beautiful, sacred center from which we radiate our capacity to change the WORLD. Yoni steaming is also about women taking back ownership of our personal health, and utilizing our intuition, as well as gifts from the Earth, to support and nourish our well-being. This is also about trusting the wisdom of generations of women, elevating their perspectives as not only valid, but necessary to our health.
This women’s treatment gently and effectively cleanses, tones and revitalizes a woman’s center, providing a benefits from reduced menstrual cramps to increased fertility. Yoni steaming is said to support one’s natural feminine cycle (supporting releasing of dark blood at the beginning or end of menstrual cycle), and help you to heal endometriosis, pelvic pain, uterine prolapse, constipation and PCOS, relax, and detoxify both physically and emotionally. Yoni steaming can be done the week after your menstrual cycle and the week before. And once every 2 weeks if treating fibroids or irregularity. There are numerous herbs that can be used in a yoni steam, and it is always advisable to contact a Natural Health and Wellness Consultant, Naturopath or Holistic Health Consultant to ensure that your blend is personally tailored for you and your concerns. The most common and effective herbs that I am aware of are Red Clover, Nettle, Rosemary, Cannabis, Mugwort, Basil, Motherwort, Calendula, Lavender, Red Raspberry Leaf, Damiana, Plantain, Juniper, Peony, Witch Hazel, Yarrow, Cedar Berries, Rose and Dong Quai. Organic, organic, organic... is the requirement for the herbal blend you decide to use. You do not want to get pesticides and other harmful chemicals in such a delicate space. I would highly recommend you researching as much as you can on your own.
Anytime we give ourselves and our precious bodies a treatment at home, we should be sure to do our research and listen to our intuition. As you consider trying a yoni steam at home, be aware that a yoni steam should not be done under certain circumstances, including: in the case of pregnancy, during menstruation, or with any kind of intrauterine device (IUD). It is also wise to avoid yoni steaming in the case of an acute infection, illness or fever, or in the case of open wounds or inflammation. Finally, exercising simple caution during yoni steaming will help you to avoid burns. Never yoni steam with a continuous heat source, and test the temperature of the steam with the back of your hand before exposing your sensitive vaginal tissue. The steam should feel pleasantly warm, and you should immediately move away from the steam if it feels too hot. I have personally burned my inner thighs, by wanting the water to be really warm, but too intense for such sensitive areas. Although I have a high heat tolerance, THAT effect is quite different. Be very mindful of the water quality, and the element that you are boiling the water in as well. All aspect of the process matters. Take special care in this sacred ritual, as there is no more sacred space than your yoni.
How to Yoni Steam
Simmer 2 liters of water with 1/2 -1 cup of herbs on the stove for 10 minutes (bring to boil and then reduce)
Turn off the heat and let sit for 5 minutes to slightly cool with lid on. Place the pot into your steam stool/box, chair or into the toilet bowl
Disrobe from the waist down, and bring a blanket. Although, I like to get completely naked. Sit down and wrap the blanket around you for warmth and to help keep the steam inside.
Allow the steam to permeate for 20 – 40 minutes and remove the herbs (you should not reuse them) release them back to earth or dispose of them in your toilet without clogging your drain.
