Are You Getting Enough Rest?

Writer's picture: Amber JohnsonAmber Johnson

I am a firm believer in the power of rest. Not only is it vitally necessary, it feels so good to get an adequate amount of proper rest. I simply do not know a better feeling. I cannot function without it and would not attempt to. I remember having a recent conversation with a good friend about how much he envied the fact that I was not plagued with insomnia as he and so many other people are. I consider my ability to sleep soundly, a total blessing, as so many health concerns are steeped in improper rest. I do not require a glass of wine, to unwind; although a really great sequence of yoga does help so much more in aiding me to a great nights sleep.

Oftentimes I deal with stress (some days better than others) and suffer from hormone fluctuating induced anxiety from time to time, and gratefully my patterns of sleep have never been affected. Yet, I know numerous people who suffer from lack of sleep due to stress and its many symptoms. I contribute the majority of my wellness to the fact that I am able to balance my busy life with the calmness and sweetness of sleep. I have always been extremely proud of the fact that as soon as my head hits the pillow, I am able to zonk out and have hours of uninterrupted sleep.

Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more. Scientists have gone to great lengths to fully understand sleep's benefits. In studies of humans and other animals, they have discovered that sleep plays a critical role in immune function, metabolism, memory, learning, and other vital functions which all affect the way you feel. Sleep is your body’s time to heal, recharge and restore itself. Sleep plays a major role in the alleviation of stress as it facilitates the relaxation of the brain to help wash away the stress and come up with proper solutions to your concerns. The brain is also able to rest. This helps in the boosting of a person mood when they eventually wake up.

Sleep. Get you some!
