Oh honey how I love thee, let me count the ways...

The many magical properties of honey are so phenomenal that I cannot believe that there are not more people gushing about its benefits. The natural blessings of honey are safer and more effective that commercial treatments and much more economical. Honey, being an emollient, is one of my favorite ingredients to use in hair masks. Honey is an emollient which means it seals moisture in your hair, keeping it conditioned. This property reduces breakage, which is often a cause for hindered hair growth. Honey also comprises antibacterial and antiseptic qualities. This prevents scalp infections and soothes issues like dandruff, eczema, and psoriasis, allowing for uninterrupted hair growth. Here are 3 recipes that utilize this sticky, gooey gold that is designed to moisturize and strengthen your hair.

1. Honey and Banana

Ripe bananas are a rich source of mineral potassium that moisturizes, rehydrates and rejuvenates dry hair. The natural oils in banana form a protective layer over the hair stands that help to retain moisture within the hair. Take an over-ripe banana and mash it using a fork. Add a tablespoon of honey to it and mix thoroughly. Apply this mixture evenly to your damp hair and scalp and put on a shower cap. Add warm moist heat if possible and after one hour, wash and condition as usual.

2. Honey and Olive Oil

Olive oil is a rich source of vitamin E that acts powerfully to repair damaged and dry hair stands by sealing the open cuticles. Vitamin A present in olive oil helps to retain keratin and moisture in the hair. Take 2 tablespoons each of extra virgin olive oil and honey in a bowl. Mix it thoroughly using a spoon. Apply this mixture all over your damp hair and scalp and put on a shower cap. Leave it on for an hour and then shampoo and condition as usual. Adenla's Elixir is the perfect mixer for this recipe

3. Honey and Coconut Milk

The wonderful moisturizing properties of coconut milk help to condition and soften dry and damaged hair. It also acts as a nourishing tonic for a parched scalp. High levels of mineral magnesium present in coconut milk strengthen the hair follicles and prevent breakage. Combine 1/2 cup of coconut milk and 1 tablespoon of honey. Mix it using a spoon and apply this mixture all over your damp hair and scalp.Let it sit for a few hours, then shampoo and condition as usual. The longer it sits the better!
